I have the composer curse. Probably been born with it. Go to bed before 2am. You wake up at 2am. Go to bed after 2am and you get up at 6 or 7am. It is like breathing, happens naturally and nothing you can do to change it.
2am means drink water, have a smoke, try to remember what was outstanding and going through emails, notifications and blogs. Yes, pretty much catching up with YOU guys. What you been up to, what are you busy with and where are you heading with it.
This morning as I opened Discord the first message I saw was “Contest….click link below. Followed the link and yes full legit contest. At this point in the morning, I do not really concentrate on where it came from. The word “CONTEST” had me on alert.
I am not a producer; I am a composer. Even though the competition said “Producers”, who says I do not stand a chance? Downloaded the files they provided. and eyeballed everything they sent. 3 folders 215 files (Yes had to do a property check on it to confirm). So, this gave us ENDLESS possible tracks. Using Reaper, I opened the explorer window and ran through everything briefly. This is like a chord progression. It either speaks to you, or it does not (There is NO maybe in this case). I picked out the ones I liked from the 215 files. I chose about 7 of them. Then, I pulled most of them apart since they were Wav files. I started re-creating the basics. Nothing fancy, tinkering piano but that was my guide to work on. Rhythm, atmosphere, add-ons, vibe etc all come down from this guide.
It resulted in a cinematic piece for the contest and submitted my entry at around 11am (9 hours later). My entry has been approved and can be voted on
