I’ve been a “good boy” lately, keeping up with my daily postings—or so I thought. Tonight, I realized my latest updates weren’t actually live; they’ve been sitting quietly in my WordPress drafts. Rather than flooding your feed with 14 back-dated posts (of which we both know you’d only read three), I’ll give you the “fast-forward” version of where the music has taken me since the lyrics for Sal jy my onthou.
The Music: Cinematic-Americana
Following the translation of Sal jy my onthou (Afrikaans to English and French), I moved into a “Country/Folk” space. In my head, it’s Cinematic-Americana—a genre that doesn’t technically exist on distribution platforms yet, so “Folk/Country” will have to do for now. It’s a classic story: the cliché of someone returning to their hometown after years away.
But clichés are just stories that stay true. Like a book written in the 1920s re-read in 2026, the heart of the story remains, but the way it’s told—the feel of it—is entirely new.
The Digital Studio: Fighting with PHP
The domain is coming along… slowly. In music, a note just is. On a website, a picture can’t just be there. It needs a back-end reason to exist, instructions for what to do if you click it, and a map of where to go next. For someone who speaks “Music” much more fluently than “PHP,” it’s a process of trial, error, and a lot of patience. What you see on the page and what I’m fighting with in the code are two very different worlds.
The Big News: “ALBUM” is coming.
The real reason I’m awake at 2:00 AM is the news from “across the pond” (Overseas). Breaths of Wood has officially moved into the pre-save and pre-add stage! It’s currently heading out to over 480 DSPs (Digital Service Providers), and by the end of March, it should be live everywhere.
We did hit one small, hilarious snag. While filling out the new distribution forms, I saw a field that I thought was asking what the project was. I naturally answered: “ALBUM.” As a result, for a brief moment in time, the album is technically titled ALBUM. My portfolio manager had a good laugh at my expense, and my team is fixing it as we speak. That’s the beauty of having a great team behind you—they catch the mistakes while you’re busy writing the notes.
